In 2010 the populace of the town was 6,623, a gain of 417.8% since 2000, for the biggest gain of any municipality in the tri-state region of Memphis TN-MS-AR. Oakland is positioned in west-central Fayette County at 35 13 36 N 89 31 5 W (35.226744, -89.518171). U.S.

Route 64 is the chief highway through town, dominant east 9 miles (14 km) to Somerville, the county seat, and west 32 miles (51 km) to downtown Memphis.

The town limits have period north and south of the initial town center, and especially to the west along US 64, extending 6.5 miles (10.5 km) to nearly reach the Shelby County line.

Prosecutors said Mullins falsified documents to cover up payments made to his own company by the City of Oakland, after he had instead of work on town/city owned vehicles at his privately owned repair shop, but did not document the $2,000 payment.
