4.2 City Mayor Settlement of Mount Pleasant began in the early 1800s, and increased following the assembly of the Military Road connecting Nashville and Madisonville, Louisiana, in 1817.
By the time Mount Pleasant incorporated as a town/city in 1824, it was home to a store, tavern, and a several churches. In 1895, brown phosphate modern was identified in Mount Pleasant, dominant to a quarrying boom, and giving the town/city its nickname.
Within a several years, ten phosphate quarrying companies were operating in Mount Pleasant, producing over 25,000 tons per year.
