Livingston was titled after Edward Livingston (1764 1836), who served as Secretary of State under President Andrew Jackson.
In 1833, in a close and controversial election, the inhabitants of Overton County voted to move the governmental center of county from the town of Monroe to Livingston. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 5.2 square miles (13 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13 km2) is territory and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.77%) is water.
