It is the governmental center of county of Marshall County. Lewisburg is positioned in central Tennessee, forty-eight miles south of Nashville and fifty-two miles north of Huntsville, Alabama, along I-65.

Located in the rolling hills of Middle Tennessee, Lewisburg took its name from the explorer Meriwether Lewis.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 11.7 square miles (30 km2), almost all of which is territory (0.09% is water).

There were 4,242 homeholds out of which 29.2% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% were married couples living together, 16.6% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families.

In the city, the populace was spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the town/city was $31,033, and the median income for a family was $38,246.

The region in which Lewisburg and Marshall County is positioned was first settled by Native Americans.

Marshall County, titled in honor of the young nation's strong first Supreme Court Chief Justice and noted American jurist, John Marshall, was established by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly in 1836.

The act which created the county specified that the governmental center of county be titled Lewisburg to memorialize the deeds of frontier explorer Meriweather Lewis.

Marshall County is momentous partly because of three Marshall Countians who have served as Governor of Tennessee: Henry Horton, Jim Nance Mc - Cord, and Buford Ellington.
